Can Sitting Quietly Change your Life?

Writer's picture: Lisa HammerLisa Hammer

I started my meditation practice a little over a year ago. If I am being honest, this was the one personal growth technique that I struggled with the most and the last to add to my toolbox. I am not really sure what my hesitation was, maybe the idea of sitting quietly for long periods of time. Or possibly the idea of not doing it right. Which I came to find is not a thing. You can't meditate wrong. Who knew. I have to admit, since incorporating meditation into my morning routine, my life has shifted and my days are more calm and I can more easily manage anything that comes my way.

So if you are like me and a bit hesitant to add meditation to your personal growth toolbox, I wanted to share with you some reasons why you might want to reconsider.

  1. Stress Reduction: Midlife often comes with increased responsibilities, such as caring for aging parents or managing career and family demands. Meditation can help women in midlife manage stress, reduce anxiety, and improve their overall emotional well-being.

  2. Hormonal Changes: Perimenopause and menopause can lead to hormonal fluctuations that can impact mood, sleep, and overall sense of well-being. Meditation has been shown to help regulate hormones, leading to better emotional balance and a smoother transition through these stages.

  3. Emotional Resilience: Midlife can bring about a range of emotions related to aging, body changes, and life transitions. Meditation can enhance emotional resilience, helping women navigate these changes with greater acceptance and self-compassion.

  4. Improved Sleep: Insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns are common during midlife. Regular meditation practice can improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing racing thoughts that often interfere with falling asleep.

  5. Mind-Body Connection: Midlife is a time when women may become more attuned to their bodies and health. Meditation helps strengthen the mind-body connection, allowing women to better understand and respond to their body's signals and needs.

  6. Cognitive Health: As women age, cognitive changes can occur. Meditation has been linked to improved cognitive function, including enhanced attention, memory, and decision-making skills.

  7. Self-Exploration: Midlife often prompts a reevaluation of life goals, values, and priorities. Meditation provides a space for self-reflection and exploration, helping women gain insights into their true desires and make informed decisions.

  8. Community and Support: Meditation can be practiced individually or in group settings. Engaging in meditation groups or communities can provide women with a sense of belonging, social support, and the opportunity to share experiences with others in similar life stages.

  9. Physical Health: Meditation has been associated with various physical benefits, including lowered blood pressure, improved immune function, and reduced inflammation. These benefits can contribute to overall better health in midlife.

  10. Positive Mindset: Midlife can sometimes be accompanied by feelings of loss or a sense of being "stuck." Meditation encourages cultivating a positive mindset, fostering optimism, and helping women approach this phase of life with a sense of renewal and growth.

It's important to note that while meditation can offer numerous benefits, individual experiences may vary. You should explore various meditation techniques and find what works best for you.
