Does Getting Older Mean We Slowly Disappear?

Writer's picture: Lisa HammerLisa Hammer

Was it real or just a figment of my imagination? It surely seemed like with each passing year, I slowly started to disappear. When I walked into a room, no one turned around. When I tried to speak, no one acknowledged me. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t recognize the woman looking back at me. All the clothes hanging in my closet or folded so neatly in my drawers no longer fit my body. Eventually, I started to stay home more than not, withdrew and felt like I was slowly disappearing. I didn’t know how to be in the world in this new phase of my life, a phase where it felt like everything was betraying me. From the extra weight, to the crows feet, sagging jowls, bags under my eyes, the constipation, fatigue and the loss of confidence. I just wanted to hide!

Finally, I decided, enough was enough, I still had more life to live and hiding was no longer an option. So, I took a stance and made a commitment to myself to live my best and healthiest life and in 2021 I did just that. I started eating better, exercising more, paid more attention to what I put into and onto my body and started to be more mindful with yoga and meditation practices. And what a difference these few changes have made in the way I experience every day. It truly has been life changing.

With this new lease on life, I am no longer hiding or slowly disappearing. Instead, I am helping other midlife women, who feel invisible get their groove back by incorporating simple healthy habits into their daily routine.
