How Healthy is your Second Brain?

Writer's picture: Lisa HammerLisa Hammer

Did you know you have two brains?

Your second brain controls:

✨ digestion and absorption

✨ immunity 🦠

✨ metabolism

✨ hormones

✨ primary brain function 🧠

✨ elimination💩

✨ inflammation

How do you know when this brain is out of whack?

You experience these symptoms:

✨ bloating

✨ constipation

✨ excess gas

✨ mood swings

✨ brain fog

✨ heartburn

✨ chronic fatigue

✨ food intolerance

✨ weight issues

✨ hormonal issues

✨ skin issues

✨ joint pain

What causes your second brain a.k.a. the gut to be out of whack?

⭐️Diet: A diet high in sugar, processed foods, and unhealthy fats can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and lead to inflammation.

⭐️Antibiotics: While antibiotics are important for treating bacterial infections, they can also kill off beneficial bacteria in the gut and disrupt the microbiome.

⭐️Chronic stress: Stress can affect the gut-brain axis and lead to changes in gut bacteria, inflammation, and digestive problems.

⭐️Lack of sleep: Poor sleep habits can disrupt the circadian rhythm and negatively affect the gut microbiome.

⭐️Environmental toxins: Exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, heavy metals, plastics and pollution can damage the gut lining and disrupt the microbiome.

⭐️Lack of exercise: Physical inactivity can slow down digestion and lead to constipation, which can negatively impact gut health.

⭐️Age: As we age, the diversity and abundance of gut bacteria can decrease, leading to changes in gut health.

What can you do to help support your gut?

👉Eat a healthy whole food diet rich in fiber, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.🥗 🍓

👉Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.💦

👉Limit processed and high-fat foods.

👉Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.

👉Exercise regularly to promote bowel movement and improve gut health.🏃🏻‍♀️

👉Manage stress through meditation, yoga, or other relaxation techniques. 🧘🏻‍♀️

👉Take probiotics/prebiotics or eat fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut to promote healthy gut bacteria.

👉Avoid antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary as they can kill beneficial gut bacteria.

👉Get enough sleep and maintain a healthy sleep schedule. 😴
