What’s a Mindful Daily Habit?

Writer's picture: Lisa HammerLisa Hammer

Let’s be real, if you aren’t being mindful in your daily habits then you are leaving your health up to chance. And that’s not you right? Of course not, as women in midlife, we take our health very seriously, understanding that the dress rehearsal is over and now is the time to get real about our health and our daily habits. But where to start?

Well let’s start with the easiest and most obvious place – Water. Our body is made up primarily of water. In fact, for women ages 51 and older, 47% of our body is made up of water. So it would behoove us to make sure we are providing our body with adequate amounts of water in order to stave off dehydration. Dehydration is another issue altogether, which we will get to at a later date, let’s just focus on how to maintain are bodies appropriate level of water.

According to the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine the average recommended amount of water intake per day for women is 2.7 liters or 11.5 cups. But we all know, averages are only a starting point, what is right for any one person is based on several factors:

· Climate

· Diet

· Exercise

· Season

· Environment

Your personal circumstances will dictate how much water you should be drinking, but it’s fair to say, water should be an important mindful daily habit.

It’s fair to say that we have concluded that getting an appropriate amount of water each day, is a quick and easy way to start being more mindful about our health and daily habits. The question then comes to mind, what type of water:

· Bottle water

· Tap water

· Filtered water

· Spring Water

I will not attempt to argue the benefits or lack there of for any of the above referenced. My recommendation would be to pick the one that you are most likely to incorporate into your day.

If you have an opinion and/or statistics on the matter, feel free to leave a comment.

For me, I most recently switched from bottled water to filtered water. This was mostly a financial decision. I could either spend on average $5/$6 per week on bottled water or one time on a Brita water filter that cost me $24, an annual savings of almost $240. And needless say, it’s better for the environment then the plastic bottles. I will call that a win in my book.

So, in conclusion, as women in midlife, one simple and easy way to be more mindful about your health is to drink more water. The amount of water to drink or what type of water you drink, depends on your specific circumstances, but it is safe to say it is a mindful habit that should be easy to implement.
